Heather Today, Gone Tomorrow

Today is the Autumnal Equinox, based on the astronomical calendar, in the Northern Hemisphere. Facing the
prospect of dwindling daylight hours we thought this would be a poignant time to share some pictures from
this year’s final summer walk.
Hill End is a small village located on the South side of Weardale. This resilient environment offers a variety of
interesting features, largely a result of the areas mining heritage and the unforgiving weather.
The heather that flowers in this area, around mid-to-late August, beautifully highlights the rugged landscape with
its characteristic purple and pink hues.
